delishLocal: Revive Wellness & Giveway!

November 2, 2010

Something I have been considering for awhile now was how I really wanted to incorporate local Edmonton small business/organizations that shared my love of food and healthy but delicious eating on my blog. Anything from our amazing Edmonton Farmers Markets, to independent stores & coffee shops, to whatever you can think of that is food related and unique to this city. I feel we have a responsibility to support community business, and I am particularly excited about the ones that have the same food philosophy that I have: eat healthy, eat local, eat deliciously. This is my first feature on a local Edmonton business, and I’m so excited to do yet ANOTHER giveaway this week (for Edmonton and area only)! Read on for details!

A few weeks ago I received an email invite to a book launch from a local Edmonton business, Revive Wellness. The book looked interesting, the company looked legit and the email was rather complimentary of my blog (what can I say, I was all over that). Best of all, there was free appys and wine to be served – Holla! So I called up my friend Candace who is always up to hang out no matter what we are doing (oh how I love friends like this!), and we agreed to meet at Revive Wellness right after work. You know, for free appys and wine!  Who wouldn’t turn that down? What we didn’t anticipate was it was going to be good. Realllllllly good.

The book that Revive Wellness published is called “Holiday Survival Guide: How to maintain your health and energy, and revive your holiday season”. It is all about making right choices during the holiday season and avoiding temptation and emotional eating. You know, the dreaded buffet table at every Christmas party, the non stop office baking (not to mention what is in your own freezer) and all the fat, sugar and everything else that comes with the holidays that is soooo bad but oh soooo good. The launch party featured food that was prepared straight from the recipes in the book, and oh mother, I don’t remember the last time healthy eating tasted so unique and delish. Greek Salad Skewers? Check. Butternut Squash Pot Skewers? Hello. Gingered carrots, baked quinoa, Maple Glazed Salmon? It’s all in the book, baby. But maybe my favorite part of it all was the desserts (oh it’s always the desserts…). First of all, Chocolate Almond Meringue – to diiiiieeeee for. Light as a feather. And my ultimate favorite: Raspberry Tiramisu. Ohhh Heavens. I may have died and gone there. It.Was.Unreal.

….

I’m back. Since I am once again thinking rationally, you may be asking me, okay but what exactly IS Revive Wellness? Well, Revive Wellness is a team of local Dieticians that are committed to providing YOU with a customized nutrition and wellness plan – anything from weight loss/management, to making right healthy choices, to food education (one of my favorite subjects), to sports nutrition, to YOU NAME IT. Their goal is to “Empower Canadians to live with energy, vitality and health”. Love it. No funny business either: One of the questions I asked when I was there was whether their focus with their clients is solely on weight loss, or on eating as healthy as possible, and the answer was a resounding “eating healthy” – weight loss is merely a side effect of healthy eating. Amen.

Something very cool that they focus on is… MENU PLANNING! Yay! In fact, they happen to be hosting a Seasonal Menu Planning Class: Holiday Edition (click to download info sheet) this coming Saturday from 10 am – 12 pm, where you can learn about creating healthy plans that incorporate local, seasonal produce and food. RSVP and go to this, you’re totally in for a treat. In case you hadn’t noticed, I’m all over the meal planning concept. Please note, there is a cost involved, so check out the info sheet or the website for details.

But now, my pretties, you may be wondering about the title of this post. You know, the little ending part that so boldly states “GIVEAWAY!” Oh yes, I am getting quite good at these as of late! Revive Wellness so graciously provided me with an extra copy of their “Holiday Survival Guide”, which not only will provide you with all the great recipes I mentioned above, but awesome tips on emotional and stress eating, being prepared during the busiest (and most stressful) time of the year, and making smart choices when faced with giant sugar cookies and candy canes that are screaming your name at your next office get together. This giveway is limited to my local vicinity only (Edmonton & Area only please…) as this is meant to directly lead you to checking out a great local business.

To enter the Holiday Survival Guide giveway, comment with the one question you would ask a Dietitian that is related to the holidays.

Anything food and holiday related will do. A Revive Wellness Dietitian will be choosing one of your questions and will answer it on my blog in the near future.

If you would like additional entries, you can do any of the following, just come back here and write a separate comment that you did so!

  • Check out the Revive Wellness Inc. website (by clicking on the name) and come back here and comment here on the one thing you would be more interested in learning about that they discuss on their website, or the one program you would be interested in trying.
  • For those of you on Twitter, first of all, follow me @delishliving, then retweet this great giveaway, then come back here and leave another comment that you have done so!
  • RSVP and attend the Menu Planning Class on Saturday, and let me know you have done so by commenting once again, on this blog post!

Winner to be announced on Sunday, November 7th!

OK… here’s my question (not a great one, but whatever – free stuff):

Which foods should you definitely stay away from when you’re attending holiday events with so many delicious foods (not planning or cooking for any of them)?

From the website: I’m most interested in the EBT (emotional brain training). I like that the Basic Training is called “Wired for Joy”. I would definitely be interested in learning more or trying this.

Yes, funny enough, this is what I find super interesting as well! i so rarely make the connection that what i’m feeling might translate into what i’m eating!
Welcome to my blog Christan, and good luck!
p.s. Are you the Christan from Val’s latest blog? Your pies looked incredible!

very cool that they contacted you and very cool that you got free wine and appetizers! That book looks like a great idea. my eating plans always seem to go out the door at Christmas holiday time. And for me it all starts in November once my decorations are up.

We didn’t even end up drinking the wine, but it was still a lovely launch – the food really was oh so good, and that’s why I am so excited to give the Survival Guide away – I know it’s quality! And yes, it was fun to be contacted 🙂

Here is my question: Is there any truth to the theory that you can “save up” your calories for the day? For instance, if you know that you’re going to a dinner or a party so you don’t eat much all day – does that allow you some breathing room to have a few extra goodies?

PS – just discovered your blog and I’m quite enjoying it – can’t wait to start trying some of the recipies!

Yay, welcome aboard! GREAT question too!

    • January 25, 2011 1:53 pm

Cara, that’s a great question as many people don’t realize it’s on calories per day (an actually the average calories per week). You can rack up calories on Monday and Tuesday to use later on Wednesday. I’ve recently lost 176 pounds by counting calories which unlocked an entirely different life for me.

    I’m sad I don’t live in Edmonton!

    • November 3, 2010 10:19 am

Aw! You can still ask a question if you’d like 🙂

  6. November 3, 2010 3:13 pm

Woohoo! Free food and wine always makes me happy :-D.

Question: I have (had) a huge weakness for pop and recently cut it out of my life. What is the best substitution (other than diet pop) that you would suggest? Are those apple/fruit sparkler drinks just as bad a pop?

Thank you for the opportunity, Kristin.

My question is: what can I do to boost my physical activity during the holidays? My relatives’ house doesn’t have a gym anywhere nearby, and I live in cold, snowy Minnesota. :/

I’m not sure if that’s an appropriate question for a dietitian, considering it’s not food related, but it’s one of my bigger holiday health woes…

Hi Kristin – wow… So many great questions so far!! Here is my question… I am hosting a Christmas party this year and want to know what are some good healthy snacks I could serve that would be delicious?? (and maybe the talk of the party -lol)

Question- How can you raise your kids to not associate food with emotions? eg. rewarding good behavior with their favorite treat etc.

  10. November 5, 2010 5:23 pm

Congratulations on getting such a fun invitation! Clearly, they invited the right person as you were thrilled about the experience and the fare, and it sounds like anyone would be. I love learning about local organizations I have never heard of before. Here’s my question for you after being to their site… why are there no men on staff????
Great, vibrant, valiant, healthy bunch of women… but, they need a bit more balance, me thinks!
However; bravo to them to create such a dynamic business, at the same time.
    And, thanks for the information!
    Always great to know.
Oh – is their counselling covered by Alberta Health Care? There is another question for you!
    🙂
